Guatemala lies in Central America, on the border of Mexico. The country has a population of about 13 million, who are distributed among the catholic Maya and the Mestizos. The language is Spanish, but many natives still speak their local dialects. The dominating religion is Roman Catholic but there are also a few Pentecostal-Mayan Catholic fusionists. The capital is Guatemala City. The highlands in the south are the most populous part of the country.

Coffee export makes up more than half the gross domestic product (GDP). Illiteracy is wide spread and the per capita income is extremely low.

Coffee production was introduced by Jesuit priests in 1750, and the industry was developed by German immigrants at the end of the 1800's. Today most of the production takes place in the volcanic areas around Sierra Madre.

One of the most famous districts is Antigua. Coffee from Guatemala is very acidulous, and connoisseurs often prefer this acidic, complex taste.
